Media and Entertainment

Few industries have been as profoundly affected by technological change as the Media and Entertainment sector. The rapid advancement of telecommunications technology, in particular the introduction of 5G technology, is set to create a host of new opportunities across the media and entertainment sector.

As of 2019, two emerging and related trends in the sector have become apparent: the accelerating growth of streaming and mobile video, and a shift away from traditional pay TV. Consumers have increasingly transitioned from satellite TV to online streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and others. Even sports entertainment, previously so dependent on satellite TV, has increasingly embraced online streaming – Sky Sports, ESPN, NBCSN and others have all introduced paid streaming services as consumers have made their preferences clear. Clearly, technology has broken down the barriers between content producers and consumers; brands and customers.

In essence, content is closer than ever before, and speed – or rather, timeliness – is critical for success in the media. Consumers want instant gratification, and content producers must respond to demand across multi-screen dimensions. Multiple devices. Information at their fingertips – consumers want engagement and involvement. Neglect this at your own peril, as brands who overlook this risk losing customers.

This engagement means that the relationship between media and consumers is no longer a one-way conversation; advances in technology mean that this relationship has evolved to involve dialogue. Content is delivered on multiple platforms and simultaneously tailored to the audience. Simply reacting to consumer demands is not enough; companies must be able to predict audience behaviour in order to get their brand talked about.
